Common Teaching Classes - Cyprus Technical University
Location Limassol
Role Architect - Design only (not construction)
Year of completion 2022
Area - New Building 950m2
Listed Building 450m2
The main idea in this project was the conection through an arcade of the two streets that sourround the plot. A key element of the study was also the inner courtyard, between the two buildings, which, together with the arcade that crosses the two buildings starting from Athena Street and ending at Sokratous Street, is intended to be not only a passage but also a vital point of university, open to the city where various events, exhibitions take place. All common areas are designed to ensure the uninterrupted movement of people with mobility problems.
The new building, (920 sq.m.) consists of six classrooms (two per floor) and auxiliary spaces. The four classrooms will be amphitheatres with a capacity of 65-70 people, while on the ground floor the second room on Athens Street will offer the possibility of changing its layout to be able to host various types of classes/lectures or events. An important element of the space is the light fixture in the center of the new building, which will illuminate the common areas of all floors while also contributing to the ventilation of the portico, making it essentially open air, like a transitional stage from the outside to the inside, from the public to the more private.
The listed building (450 sq.m.) will be designed to house office spaces for the administrative staff of the university and a small classroom. To enable it to function as a building, a metal walkway has been added at the back of the building to the inner courtyard and an elevator.
